Hello, Parents!
All first graders in Cobb County will be taking the Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT) this week from Wednesday, September 4- Friday, September 6, typically lasting 2 hours each day. This is a mental abilities test. The only way to prepare the children is to make sure that they get plenty of sleep and eat a good breakfast. When sending in a snack for your child, please send in “brain food” that can be consumed (10 minutes or less). We will eat snack after the test. I will have some extra snacks on hand too. Some snack ideas are crackers, string cheese, and cut up fruit. As an incentive to arrive on time, and to do their best, we’re also planning on a “de-stressing” game time after the tests, allowing the students to play board or card games. They may bring ones from home to share, as long as they are not electronic or include violence. You can send them in tomorrow. The test will begin promptly at 8:15 a.m. each day. Please make sure that your child arrives on time. If your child is tardy, they’ll wait until the next session begins and will make up any missed tests or sections with another teacher at a later date. Thank you so much for your assistance!

Hello Parents!
Here is some quick information about a couple of our online resources. I use these websites very frequently within the classroom as part of our Reading and Math Centers, and your child can also access them at home! DreamBox: DreamBox is an incredible math program that takes students through different engaging math lessons. If you’re using a browser, use this link: https://play.dreambox.com/login/xe2y/awre If your student uses a picture password, you will also need to enter this Classroom Code: 39074. HeadSprout: Headsprout is a self paced phonics program with reading comprehension skill lessons. Kids A-Z Login Instructions Step 1: Go to www.kidsa-z.com Step 2: Enter or choose the teacher's username: eunderwood6 All login information for both websites was sent home on Friday. :) A reminder for this week: This Wednesday, the 28th, is an early release day due to a teacher professional learning opportunity. Students will be dismissed at 12:30. (Our lunch time will be 11:17 that day.) Please let me know if you have any questions! Hello Parents!
Thank you so much for supporting this year’s Kennesaw Obstacle Challenge! The program was a huge success, and I know everyone had so much fun! There’s just one more thing left to do. We need your help collecting all of our pledges. As a class, we raised $2252.50 — our goal is to collect 100% of all pledges by 08/23/2019. All sponsors that included their email address when making a pledge will receive an email reminder and instructions to pay for their pledge. Please reach out to those sponsors who did NOT include their email address to let them know they can send cash or check to you, which will then be sent to school in your child’s collection envelope (coming home soon). Finally, please encourage your student to thank all of their sponsors for helping our school! Thank you again for your support! Let me know if you have any questions. Also, if you are interested in what we are learning this week in class, take a look at the "this week" tab above. :) Hello Parents!

We had an amazing first 2 days in 1st grade last week! We worked on learning our classroom procedures and started to get to know one another. I can already tell it is going to be an INCREDIBLE year. This week we will continue to practice our classroom procedures as well as continue to hit the ground running with our curriculum! The 1st quarter is mostly a review of what they learned in Kindergarten, but does go a little bit beyond that into some new territory. The reason for this is because the curriculum moves very quickly the rest of the year, and a solid foundation is necessary for success. A good way to help your child is to read at home nightly. I will be sending sight words home as well within the next couple of weeks to work on, so keep on the lookout for that. :) Please take a look at the "Learning Resources" tabs at the top of this page to see various math and reading websites that your child can use to practice at home as well. A couple of important notes: We are still waiting on our take home folders to arrive, but once they do, they will be in your child's book bag along with their agenda. I will send home more information on this shortly. We do eat snack every day mid-morning, so please be sure to send a healthy snack with your child to school daily. If you have any questions please let me know! Mrs. Underwood Welcome to a new school year! My name is Emily Underwood, and I am so excited that I will be your child’s 1st grade teacher this year.
As a First Grade teacher, I strive to meet the individual needs of the children in my class as well as encourage deep thinking and a love of learning along the way. I believe that classroom structure is important so that children understand expectations, but within that structure we have many fun, hands-on experiences and cooperative activities to solidify important concepts. I believe that children learn best through hands on activities where they are given opportunities to problem solve, work collaboratively, and think creatively. I have a background in the arts as a dancer and singer, and I use both movement and music to engage students and teach concepts in my classroom daily. I am extremely passionate about teaching, and I am excited to share that passion with you! Here are a few important details about the school year: -Each child will need a healthy snack and water bottle daily as well as the school supplies listed. -Breakfast is available each morning from 7:10-7:45. Students will pick up breakfast on the way into the school and eat their breakfast in the classroom. -Students should be in the classroom ready to learn no later than 7:50 but may arrive as early as 7:10. If your child plans to purchase breakfast at school, please make sure they have arrived early enough to do so before the announcements start at 7:50. -Our specials classes run on a six day rotation. During the daily specials time your child will participate in PE, Art, Music, and Technology. Your child should wear PE shoes on the first day of school. I will be sending home a calendar listing all of the specials days each month so that you can help your child dress appropriately. -Finally, please make sure that I have your child’s transportation information for the first week of school. If there are any changes in transportation make sure to notify me in writing (not in an email). Upcoming Dates: Please come and visit us on July 30th for our Open House!
